Dysmenorrhoea is the name given to painful menstrual periods. It is normal
for every woman to feel a certain discomfort and mild pain during her
menstrual period. However, it is not normal for the pain to be intense and
for the woman to be prevented from certain activities. Dysmenorrhoea can be
of two main types, depending on its causes. It can be primary or secondary.
The first one affects women that are in good shape and have no other illness
or disease. Secondary dysmenorrhoea is actually the result of another

Primary dysmenorrhoea is the general type of painful periods. This is where

Secondary dysmenorrhoea means that the pain is caused by a ailment of the
uterus. This is less common, and is more probably to occur in women in their
30's and 40's. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as

dysmenorrhea.

There are also painkilling tablets found that contain the drug, hyoscine (eg
Feminax), which may help prevent the muscle contractions. Vitamin B6 is
required to help produce 'good' prostaglandins that help to relax and widen
blood vessels as opposed to 'bad' prostaglandins which increase the womb
contractions and increase the pain. Chiropractic care has been an effective
treatment technique. Accupuncture is used to treat dysmenorrhea.

4. Seeds of chicory are prepared into a reduction to treat problems of
obstructed menstruation.

6. Fish is a good dietary indication for painful periods.
7. Fry asafetida in ghee and add a teaspoonful of it to buttermilk. Have
this once a day in case of dysmenorrhea.
