Many of the people working in the
pharmaceutical sales sector often consider switching to a healthcare sales
role. In truth there are some major differences between the two roles. To
begin with, a medical sales representative in pharmaceuticals is likely to
be employed by a larger, more structured organisation than those working in
healthcare.
Those working in pharma are also likely to come under much more scrutiny
from their managers. One of the reasons for this is that it is much more
difficult to accurately measure sales in the healthcare sector than those in
pharma. The sales date in Pharmaceutical Sales tends to arrive two months
after the sales have been completed and is usually presented in postcode
blocks. As well as this there could be more than one representative working
in a postcode area, meaning that it is difficult for managers to pinpoint a
successful representative, or activities which may have led to the sales.
This is good news if your not a particularly good sales person (depending on
your salary structure of course), but equally not so good if you are doing
your job well and not getting the credit that you deserve. Healthcare
Sales Jobs are usually different in this respect. These sales usually
require deals and contracts to be signed, meaning that you will know exactly
what you have sold, how much for and who to. With this in mind, it is
obvious at the end of each month who the more successful representatives
are. This does tend in the top performers being "less managed" by the powers
that be. After all why interfere with somebody who is doing their job well?!
Healthcare sales companies usually have flatter structures than the majority
of the set ups within Pharmaceutical sales. Some believe that this does
result in progression opportunities being restricted, however it tends to
allow for less "politics" to occur within a company, leading to a happier
and more personal work environment.
Now at the risk of sounding obvious if you are working in Medical Sales and
are not particularly good at it, stick with it and don't move over to
Healthcare. If you're not a strong sales person, it will soon show at the
end of each month when your sales figures aren't impressive. You will soon
feel the heat from your management in a way that you wouldn't do in Pharma
Sales!
You should not consider moving to Healthcare sales as well if you just fancy
a change of scenery or manager. As well as this, don't believe the hype of
the bigger bonus's, you will only get them if you are good at the role!
Overall the environment in this role is more transparent and could elevate
your career to a whole new level, you just need to establish if it is for
you or not!
