Inkjet Printers vis-a-vis Laser Printers

Printers are output devices which give the user the hard copies of electronic documents. In other words, the user gets a printed copy of a document he/she has composed, or got it from some other source, in the computer. For instance, the user can type a letter in any 'text editor', or download a picture from the internet; and then get a printed copy of it on a plain paper by using a printer.

Printers vary in size, speed, sophistication, and cost. In today's world, printers in use can be distinguished primarily into two categories- I) Inkjet printers and 2) Laser Printers.

Inkjet printers incite ink droplets of various sizes on a plain paper to print an image of digital quality. They employ a piezoelectric material having ink cartridges at the back of the nozzles. It vibrates by the pressure of electric voltage and the ink gets sprouted from the nozzles. As the ink gets sprouted in jets with pulses of electric voltage, they are called 'Inkjet printers'.
On the other hand, Laser printers are designed to produce prints of texts and graphics of sublime quality. Laser printers tend to use the xerographic technology which scans the photoreceptor across by laser beams. Due to the implementation of the laser beams, they are called 'Laser printers'.

A comparative study

As far as speed is concerned, Laser printers have the upper hand over Inkjet printers. Laser printers treat images and texts equally. Therefore, the printing speed doesn't drop when it comes to printing the pictures.
Whereas, in case of Inkjet printers, each pixel has to be sprayed with ink exclusively. Therefore, the speed tends to drop in case of Inkjet printers when it comes to printing images of higher resolution.

Inkjet printers weigh around eleven pounds, whereas Laser printers are almost four times heavier. The high tone cartridges are responsible for the extra weight and space.

Laser printers employ a single high-tone cartridge for printing. Whereas, Inkjet printers cannot suffice with just one color cartridge. Moreover, the Inkjet cartridges tend to exhaust faster than the former.

But Inkjet printers score highly over Laser printers when the price issue comes in. Inkjet printers are much cheaper than the Laser printers. The average price of an Inkjet printer revolves around US$40-80. Whereas, the average price of a Laser printer ranges around US$200-300. This is why the Inkjet printers are still more popular to common users than Laser printers. But since the cartridges of Inkjet printers exhaust faster than that of Laser printers, the ultimate cost of an Inkjet printer, with cartridges, compared to that of a Laser printer, after five years of usage, may be the same if not more.

But common users still tend to prefer Inkjet printers ahead of Laser printers as they don't have to invest a large sum of money at a time. Moreover, the cost of cartridges, as well as the cost of printing per page are much lesser and affordable in Inkjet printers. People are happy to invest for their printers gradually, rather than bear the burden once.
