What to Say in Salah Prayer?

Salam Sazzadur,

I agree. God did not specify the number of so-called rak'at (units) in Salat the same way He did not specify how many times we wash our bodyparts for wudu' (ablution) in 5:6. We can always compare the Salat with wudu'. In 5:6 God never tells us we must wash our arms or face three times. Simialarly, God never told us we must bow to Him two times in the dawn or four in the noon.

Once we take the Quran 'as-is' at 'face-value' things become much easier and clearer for us, Inshallah.

Peace

Joe

Salam,

I understand that the Quran makes our life very easy. Allah makes everything in the Quran easy for us. But many Hadith make complicated.

There is no specific rakats in any salat. So we can perform 1 rakat or as many as we wish in each salat. Traditionally various rakats are performed in different salat, for example, 2 rakats in the morning, 4 rakats in the noon and so on.   The holy Quran does not tell about this type of tradition. So, where did it come from and who introduced it? We should follow Quran. If I perform 1 rakat in each salat with standing, bowing, and prostrating and follow Quran's rule, I think that would be perfect.

Salam,

I agree with what most has been said here. However, I'd like to point out that the Quran does not specify that we must say 'subhan rabi al a'la or subhan rabi al 'azeem' during Salat. These are of course optional and we can glorify God during Salat in any manner we please.

I also disagree with the claim that the Salat must end with 'alhamdulillahi rab al 'alameen'... Verse 10:10 simply speaks of the dwellers of paradise who say this at the end of their du'a... It has nothing to do with Salat. Again, this ending our salat with these words is not a must but only optional in my view.

The only true criteria for Salat is to recite from the Quran (29:45), glorify God (17:110), use a moderate tone of voice (17:110), and say the specific words mentioned in 17:111. All other things are optional.

Salam,

Very good inputs from the holy Quran on Salat. Islam is not anybody’s personal property so let us preach the holy Quran to make this world a better place for everybody. And Allah almighty promises us guaranteed paradise if we follow His commands. And Allah is very kind; He does not want to make our lives unnecessarily complicated.

Hadith followers say Allah does not explain in details in the holy Quran how to pray(salat)!! It is a damn lie against Allah. God repeatedly assures us that the Quran is complete, fully detailed and it explains everything whatever we need for our eternal salvation. I don’t understand what happened to those fake hadith followers!! Many thanks to share your genuine and honest thoughts.

Dear All,

My question is what should we utter during salat when we are in the position of standing, bowing and prostrating?

We cannot find any specific words in the Quran for specific position. We can utter the words based on the Quran’s teaching. Quran explains about salat position - standing, bowing and prostrating. We know that Quran explains everything. We can find the proof from following verses:

(6:38) We did not leave anything out of this book.

(6:114) Shall I seek other than GOD as a source of law, when He has revealed to you this book fully detailed? Those who received the scripture recognize that it has been revealed from your Lord, truthfully. You shall not harbor any doubt.

(16:89) We have revealed to you this book to provide explanations for everything, and guidance, and mercy, and good news for the submitters.

Based on the Quran, I found the following rules and words.

1. (29:45) You shall recite what is revealed to you of the Scripture (the Quran), and observe the Salat (Contact Prayers)

God tells us what should we do when we read the Quran.

(16:98) When you read the Quran, you shall seek refuge in GOD from Satan the rejected.

**So, we should utter "A"uzu b"Allah min Al-Shaytan Al-Rajeem" to start our salat as we must recite Quran during salat.

Then we should recite some verses.

2. (2:185) GOD wishes for you convenience, not hardship, that you may fulfill your obligations, and to glorify GOD for guiding you, and to express your appreciation.

(17:111) And proclaim: "Praise be to GOD, who has never begotten a son, nor does He have a partner in His kingship, nor does He need any ally out of weakness," and magnify Him constantly.

**So, we should utter ‘Allahu Akbar’ to magnify Him.

3. (56:74) You shall glorify the name of your Lord, the Great.

**So, we should utter "Sobhan Rabi Al-Azeem" (Praise my Lord the Great) at any time during the salat.

4. (87:1) Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High.

** So, we should utter "Sobhan Rabi Al-Aala" (Praise my Lord the Most High) at any time during the salat?

5. (3:18) "God bears witness that there is no god except He, and so do the angels and those who possess knowledge"

**So, we should utter the words “Ash"hadu ana la illaha ila Allah" (I bear witness that there is no God other than God) during salat?

6. (17:110) Say, "Call Him GOD, or call Him Most Gracious; whichever name you use, to Him belongs the best names." You shall not utter your Contact Prayers (Salat) too loudly, nor secretly; use a moderate tone.

(17:111) And proclaim: "Praise be to GOD, who has never begotten a son, nor does He have a partner in His kingship, nor does He need any ally out of weakness," and magnify Him constantly.

** So, we should utter "Al-Hamdu l"Allah alazee lam yatakhez waladan, wa lam yakun lahu shareek fee al mulk, wa lam yakun lahu waleyon min al zol" (Praise be to GOD, who has never begotten a son, nor does He have a partner in His kingship, nor does He need any ally out of weakness)

7. Conclusion of Salat:

Usually people conclude the salat by turning the head right/left and utter “Al-Salamu alaykum wa Rahmat Allah wa Barakatu" (Peace be upon you as well as God"s mercy and His blessings). But Quran does not tell about this. Who are we addressing when we utter these words “Al-Salamu alaykum wa Rahmat Allah wa Barakatu" (Peace be upon you as well as God"s mercy and His blessings)? Surely we cannot be addressing God because we cannot say to God, "may God's mercy and blessings be upon you"!

We find about the conclusion of salat in the Quran as follow.

(10:10) Their prayer therein is, "Be you glorified our God" their greeting therein is, "Peace" and the ending to their prayer is, "Praise be to God, Lord of the Universe" .

** So, we should conclude our salat by uttering “Al-Hamdu l"Allah Rab Al-Alameen” (Praise be to God, Lord of the Universe)?

In summary, the method of observing the salat is as follows:

1. A"uzu b"Allah min Al-Shaytan Al-Rajeem (I seek refuge in God from Satan the rejected" (based on 16:98)

Recite some verses (Based on 29:45).

2. Allahu Akbar (God is the Greatest) to be spoken frequently (based on 2:185 and 17:111).

3. Sobhan Rabi Al-Azeem (Praise my Lord the Great) (based on 56:74).

4. Sobhan Rabi Al-Aala (Praise my Lord the Most High) (based on 87:1).

5. Ash"hadu ana la illaha ila Allah (I bear witness that there is no God other than God) (based on 3:18).

6. Al-Hamdu l"Allah alazee lam yatakhez waladan, wa lam yakun lahu shareek fee al mulk, wa lam yakun lahu waleyon min al zol (Praise be to God who has never begotten a son, nor does He have a partner in His kingship, nor does He need an ally out of weakness) (based on 17:111).

7. The Salat concludes with the words: Al-Hamdu l"Allah Rab Al-Alameen (Praise be to God, Lord of the Universe) (based on 10:10).

The above is my understanding from the Quran and other sources based on the Quran.

There are many knowledgeable scholars in this group. It would be great if any of you can explain this according to the Quran only, as God explains everything in the Quran, and God tells us not to seek other sources other than Quran.

Regards,

Sazzadur Rahman
